The Execution – Children’s placemat design is the most demanding piece of this children’s foodservice product collection.
Placemats are key for children’s dining experience.
The utilitarian aspect is helping servers keep tables clean but they have the opportunity to provide children entertainment and distraction while waiting for food to be served.
The direction given for this piece required the placemat to entertain a variety of children age 3-9. Due to the differences seen in development in this age group, design execution was double sided to provide extensive entertainment despite reading and extensive motor skills
For younger children, games such as a maze, tic tac toe, and color were provided. For older children, ocean facts and word games like crossword and word find were supplied. All of which designed with a cohesive ocean theme to tie into the plate (bubble plate) and the drink cup. Characters such as Wendell the Whale can be see throughout all art.
Characters such as Wendell the Whale are utilized beyond foodservice cup and placemat and are implemented into marketing materials such as promotional product youtube videos, web, and catalog. The goal with the character was to balance educational and fun with recognizable animal that will engage children using the cup and placemat. In market studies an important aspect of Children’s placemat design and cup design is encouraging engagement of children to distract them while waiting for food (and ideally avoiding a hunger driven meltdown while waiting).
